Slovenian President Borut
Pahor on Monday wrote to President Sergio Mattarella voicing
concern over "some unacceptable declarations by high
representatives of the Italian Republic on the occasion of the
day of Remembrance which give the impression that the events
linked to the Foibe were a form of ethnic cleansing".
The Croatian news agency HINA linked Pahor's protest to
Deputy Premier Matteo Salvini's statement that "the children who
died in the Foibe and the children of Auschwitz are the same".
The Foibe is the name given to the mass murder of Italian
people in Venezia Giulia, Istria and Dalmatia, mostly by
Yugoslav Partisans, during and after the Second World War.
