Donald Trump's administration has
said it will ask the Vatican for an audience with Pope Francis
during Trump's trip to Italy for the May 26-27 G7 summit, and
the Vatican has said the pontiff is always prepared to welcome
foreign heads of State.
"We will contact the Vatican" to try to set up an audience,
White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Wednesday.
"It would certainly be an honour".
On the Vatican side, Msgr Angelo Becciu, deputy head for
general affairs at the Secretariate of State, told ANSA: "Pope
Francis is always willing to welcome heads of State who apply
for audiences".
