Thirteen researchers including six Italians are preparing to begin the winter research campaign in Antarctica at the Italian-French Concordia base on the Antarctic plateau, over 3,000m above sea level and 1,200km from the coast.
Like the summer campaign, this expedition is also part of the National Antarctic Research Programme, funded by the Ministry of Universities and Research and managed by the National Research Council in relation to scientific coordination, the National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) for the logistics of activities at the Antarctic bases, and the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics for the technical and scientific management of its research vessel, the Laura Bassi.
The researchers, who also include six from the French Polar Institute Paul Emile Victor and a doctor from the European Space Agency, will work together on 29 projects in atmospheric physics and chemistry and biomedicine, as well as maintaining the base.
Some 130 researchers and technicians have been working in the 'Mario Zucchelli' station and on board the Laura Bassi on 31 projects on atmospheric science, geology, paleoclimate, biology, oceanography and astronomy. The expedition is also supported by the armed forces, which has participated with 16 experts.BE
