(ANSA) - Rome, May 26 - Pope Francis on Monday planted an
olive tree in Gethsemane, the garden at Mount of Olives where,
according to the Gospels, Jesus prayed and his disciples slept
the night before Jesus was crucified.
The pope inserted the peace symbol next to another olive
tree planted by Pope Paul VI when he visited the Holy Land in
1964.
Some trees in the garden are among the oldest trees known
to science, dating back nearly 1000 years.
Francis also planted an olive tree in the garden of the
Israeli presidential palace in Jerusalem, along with Israeli
President Shimon Peres, and at the Apostolic Delegation of
Jerusalem and Palestine.
The pope is on the third and final day of a visit to the
Holy Land.
