(ANSA) - Rome, March 17 - Susanna Camusso, head of the
powerful CGIL trade union federation, said Tuesday that while
her organization is willing to work on a social coalition it has
no political aspirations.
She spoke after she and Maurizio Landini, leader of the
FIOM union, met and issued a statement saying it would be
"useful" to work together on a social coalition.
That would build on work that began last weekend when
Landini met with social activists aimed at developing a group to
lobby against government policies.
The pair issued a joint statement after they met Tuesday.
However, the CGIL also urged Landini to "wipe any
ambiguity" away over whether this social coalition has political
aspirations.
Camusso said later that the CGIL did not want to change its
work as a trade union federation.
"We do not want to become substitutes...or creators of a
new political formation," she said.
"We think that we should remove any ambiguity.
"The union has its political subjectivity but a strong
autonomy and cannot be confused with the construction of a
political movement," she said.
