(ANSA) - Pozzallo, June 1 - Police said Monday that two suspected human smugglers were arrested as 1,019 migrants including about 200 children landed in Pozzallo after weekend rescues of 4,243 people.
Two Tunisians were accused of each bringing 500 migrants in overloaded wooden boats, some 90% from Eritrea.
Two alleged smugglers were arrested with help from police in Dubrovnik, authorities said. In total, some 4,243 migrants were rescued off the coast of Libya, and 17 bodies recovered amid some 22 rescue operations coordinated by Italian authorities.
Rescue operations were carried out by ships from Ireland, Germany, Belgium and Britain as well as Italy.
About 13 boats and nine barges ferrying migrants were among those assisted, authorities said. A ship carrying about 900 of the rescued migrants from the weekend was expected to arrive mid-Monday, likely at Cagliari.
