(ANSA) - Athens, July 9 - Passport applications have
increased in Greece amid fears of an imminent default and
subsequent exit from the eurozone, the on-line edition of
Kathimerini reported Thursday.
In Athens some 1,580 passport applications were filed on
Wednesday alone, the paper said.
This represents an increase of over 50% over the same
period last year, while the long-term average for this point in
the summer holiday season is around 600 applications per day.
On Sunday Greeks voted overwhelmingly in a referendum to
reject new austerity measures in exchange for further financial
support.
Greek and other European leaders are now rushing to
negotiate an alternative bailout accord.
