Prosecutors want Russian businessman tried for fraud

Scams cost Italian state 59mn, investigators say

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Milan, September 17 - Milan prosecutors on Thursday renewed a request for Russian businessman Igor Akhmerov and others to stand trial for involvement in fraud in the solar power sector that cost the Italian state about 59 million euros.
Akhmerov, an owner of the Swiss company Avelar Energy Ltd, a subsidiary of Russia's Renova, was part of a group that prosecutors say committed "an unspecified number of scams" related to solar energy production incentives, to the detriment of an economy ministry-owned energy services management company.
Two of the accused reached a plea bargain deal with prosecutors on Thursday, negotiating 10-month prison sentences.
The next preliminary hearing is due on October 20, when a judge will decide whether to order a trial.
