Catania airport reopens to inbound flights after storms

Seven planes had to be rerouted to Palermo, Lamezia Terme

(ANSA) - Catania, October 21 - Normal services resumed at Catania airport on Wednesday following a brief closure to incoming aircraft due to a major thunderstorm in the area.
    In total seven flights into the eastern Sicilian airport had to be rerouted to the regional capital Palermo or to Lamezia Terme across the Messina strait on the Italian mainland. Also in the Catania region drivers called on fire fighters for assistance after getting stuck on flooded roads, while a main road linking the coastal towns of Acitrezza and Acireale was blocked by a landslide. It has been raining heavily in the area since the early hours of the morning.
