Rome commuters hobbled by transport strike, vehicle ban

Underground closed, odd-numbered license plates banned for smog

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Rome, December 4 - Rome's commuters suffered a double whammy on Friday when a four-hour public transport strike coincided with an anti-smog measure temporarily banning license plates ending in odd numbers.
The public transport strike began at 8:30 a. m. and saw all underground lines closed, as well as the Roma-Lido train service and some bus lines.
The strike was compounded by a citywide anti-smog measure banning odd license plates on Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and again from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with the same measure to affect even-numbered plates on Saturday.
Methane, GPL, hybrid, and Euro 6 vehicles are exempt from the ban, as are Euro 2 and Euro 3 motorcycles.
