(ANSA) - Rome, February 5 - Former premier and Democratic
Party (PD) chief Pier Luigi Bersani said Friday the center-left
ruling party is not a port of call open to all and sundry.
"The PD is not a power party good for any and all uses,"
Bersani said. "We are not a port of call in which anyone may
disembark".
His remarks came after an ex-governor convicted of aiding
and abetting the Mafia said his erstwhile voting base of two
million has moved over to Premier Matteo Renzi's PD.
The Sicily PD section yesterday froze all new party
memberships as a result of the comments by Salvatore Cuffaro,
who was from Silvio Berlusconi's now-defunct People of Freedom
(PdL) party and who was convicted for aiding and abetting the
Mafia while he was governor.
Cuffaro was released from prison last December after
serving four years and 11 months of a seven-year sentence for
conniving with Cosa Nostra.
