(ANSA) - Taranto, October 17 - A 22-year-old man from the
Gambia killed himself after his asylum claim was rejected, the
Babele pro-migrant association said Wednesday.
Amadou Jawo was reported to have hanged himself from the
cornice of his home at Castellaneta Marina near Taranto where he
lived with other Gambians.
Babele has launched a subscription drive to pay for his body
to be flown home.
It said "his claim was denied and he could no longer stay in
Italy".
"He wanted to go back to Africa but he was afraid he would be
marked out as a failure and he was ashamed. He thought he had no
choice (but to commit suicide)".
