(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 26 - There was fresh tension on Friday at Mondragone, a town in the province of Caserta where a 'red zone' area has been sealed off to prevent contagion spreading after 49 people tested positive for COVID-19.
Clashed erupted on Thursday between Bulgarian nationals inside the sealed-off area, who want to leave it to be able to work on local farms, and Italian residents who want the red zone to be respected.
Firefighters had to intervene at around 2:00 on Friday to put out a van in flames.
The vehicle reportedly belongs to a Bulgarian.
Arson is suspected.
An army contingent has been sent to the area to help keep the situation under control and the police presence has been beefed up too.
Campania Governor Vincenzo De Luca has threatened to seal off the whole town if the number of people infected reaches 100.
