Girl,12, taken from mum over betrothal to Pakistani

(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 3 - A 12-year-old Italian girl has been taken from her mother and placed with her paternal grandparents after the mother promised her in marriage to the brother of her new Pakistani husband, the Nuovo Quotidiano di Puglia newspaper reported Thursday.
    The girl is the daughter of two Italians from the southern Puglia region, who got divorced before the mother married a Pakistani man in Pakistan.
    The girl's father reported the case to prosecutors who got a minors' court in Lecce to strip the mother of her maternal rights.
    The Italo-Pakistani couple had also forced the girl to wear an Islamic veil. (ANSA).
