(ANSA) - ROME, APR 29 - A child was named after his mother in
Pesaro Friday in the first case of non-attribution of the
father's surname after a landmark ruling from the Constitutional
Court earlier this week.
A court in the Marche seaside town upheld am appeal from the
boy's mother to include her surname in the child's surname,
despite the opposition of the father.
The supreme court ruling has been hailed by women's rights
activists and most Italian political parties.
It established that naming children after their father should
not be automatic and children can have a double surname or just
the father's or mother's if the parents agree. (ANSA).
