Storms lash south, Stromboli engulfed in mud

Sorrento and Scilla damaged, long waits for Sicily ferries

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 12 - Violent thunderstorms lashed the south of Italy Friday as heavy rain continued to break the steamy 'afa' summer heat.
Stromboli was engulfed in mud as landslides spread across the iconic volcanic island due to a lack of vegetation caused by a fire that happened during a TV serial shoot, the local mayor said.
Sorrento near Naples suffered fresh damage from more 'water bombs'.
There were other torrential downpours in and around Reggio Calabria.
The damage was estimated to be the worst at Scilla on the Messina Strait.
There were waits of up to three hours for ferries to the southern Italian island of Sicily. (ANSA).
