(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 13 - An 85-year-old woman was released from Milan's tough San Vittore Prison Thursday after spending the last two weeks there after being given an eight month sentence for squatting.
The woman, who was not self-sufficient and limping, was freed after an outcry led by prisoners' rights group Antigone.
Antigone said the woman should never have gone to jail because her crime did not pose a danger to society and her term was so short.
Milan prisoners guarantor Franco Maisto told reporters: "You should have seen her. It's always good to keep your eyes open and to look at people. We have proof that when poor people are not helped in their sentences these are the consequences".
Antigone denounced the case saying the woman needed constant help from her fellow inmates and jail medical staff.
She had been found guilty of illegally occupying a flat on the outskirts of the Lombard capital. (ANSA).
