(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 6 - Some 10,000 Italian businesses folded last year and 6,000 of them were led by women, the Cerved research institute and the Unioncamere association of chambers of commerce said in separate surveys Monday.
Cerved said that some 89,192 new businesses set up shop in Italy in 2022, 10. 587 fewer than 2021, an annual drop of 10.6%, and 5.9% down on 2019, the first year that saw a fall after straight gains since 2013.
It cited a number of factors in the fall including the slowdown in the economy, price rises and interest rate hikes, and uncertainty about the future.
In its won study on the women-led firms, Unioncamere said many fewer women had set up shop in traditional sectors like agriculture, commerce and retail, manufacturing and hospitality, but more innovative female entrepreneurship had accelerated, powered by sectors with greater knowledge content.
