(ANSA) - ROME, APR 23 - Italy is to evacuate 200 civilians
including 140 Italians out of Sudan, Deputy Premier and Foreign
Minister Antonio Tajani said on Sunday.
"There are 140 Italian citizens who need to be evacuated, the
assembly point is the embassy which is fully operational, and
then there are the military who will be involved in the rescue
operations," Tajani said during current affairs talk show
'Mezz'ora in più' on Rai 3.
"We will also help evacuate the Swiss and the Apostolic
Nunciature and about 20 European citizens. About 200 civilians
will have to be evacuated by our military," added the Foreign
Minister.
Tajani said he has spoken with the leaders of the two warring
parties in Sudan, where recent fighting between the regular army
and paramilitary forces has left hundreds of people dead, and
received guarantees regarding the security of Italians during
the evacuation.
"Both said they were in favour of allowing the convoy of
Italians to leave the country," Tajani added.
"We are working to ensure that we can get all Italians who want
to leave to safety. by the end of the night," he concluded.
