(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 21 - Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti is not asking for extension of the suspension of the general clause in the EU's Stability and Growth Pact mandating budget discipline, which was suspended for the COVID pandemic, sources at the economy ministry said Monday.
In relation to comments by Giorgetti at the Rimini Meeting of influential lay Catholic group Communion and Liberation, the sources said that "the minister is not asking for an extension of the suspension of the Stability Pact clause in force until 31/12/23, but has expressed the hope that by the end of the year the reform of the Stability Pact will be approved so that it can enter into force in place of the old rules from 1 January 24".
Giorgetti said at the CL meeting that he hoped that the Stability and Growth Pact's general clause, on fiscal discipline, which has not been applied since the COVID pandemic, would come into force again next January. (ANSA).
