(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 23 - Premier Giorgia Meloni responded to
centre-left opposition Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein
accusing the government of bringing in "the crime of solidarity"
by fining and impounding migrant rescue ships that head to other
ports than those assigned them by saying that "we are only
enforcing the law".
Meloni said on social media: "Crime of solidarity? We are
enforcing laws and principles that have always existed in every
State: it is not allowed to ease illegal immigration and to
favour, directly or indirectly, human trafficking.
"Solidarity is stopping the voyages of hope and the deaths at
sea. Because helping enrich those who organise human trafficking
has nothing to do with the words solidarity and humanity".
