(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 10 - An inmate dies in a Viterbo prison
Sunday while another prisoner tried to kill himself, authorities
there said amid a wave of prison suicides linked to overcrowding
and bad conditions in Italy's jails.
One inmate died of an illness, another was rescued from a
suicide attempt, and a riot broke out after the prison police
intervened, in night of chaos in the Mammagialla prison in
Viterbo, explained the regional secretary of the penitentiary
police union, USPP lazio, Daniele Nicastrini.
"(It was) an escalation of events that put a strain on the staff
on duty and made the intervention of a support team necessary,"
he said, stressing that Italian prisons are coming under
intolerable stress. (ANSA).
