(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 17 - Italian police have reinforced
security measures around the Vatican after recent international
events, including Monday's terrorist attack in Brussels.
"Personnel have been informed of the need to maintain a
constantly vigilant attitude while on duty to protect their own
safety and that of other people and to rapidly pick up on any
situation considered anomalous," the Italian State Police's
Vatican Inspectorate told ANSA.
Furthermore, the Carabinieri police on duty in the area of St.
Peter's Square were wearing bullet-proof vests and carrying
machine guns on Tuesday.
As always, strict controls were being conducted at the
metal-detector points that visitors must pass through to enter
St Peter's Basilica, causing long queues. (ANSA).
