(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 13 - European foreign ministers have discussed a joint document presented by Italy, France and Germany "aimed at isolating Hamas, preventing it from doing harm, reducing its funding and preventing an upsurge of anti-Semitism in Europe and the world", Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Monday.
"Italy is in the front line to assist the civilian population of Gaza and we are willing to treat injured Palestinian children in Italy," he added.
Tajani also reiterated "full support for Israel's right to defend itself" and insisted that "hostages in the hands of terrorists must be released unconditionally".
Looking ahead, the foreign minister said that "Gaza must be part of a future Palestinian state" and that "the only legitimate organisation to govern it is the PNA".
"Of course it must change and modernise," he continued.
"In a transitional phase there could be a UN presence and a Unifil-type presence to avoid a backlash, as there is on the border between Israel and Hezbollah," said Tajani.
"We are ready to do our part if requested, he continued, adding that "Italy, with its credibility in the Middle East, can play an important role in the two-state solution". (ANSA).
