(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 21 - Cardinal Matteo Zuppi on Tuesday
warned against the dangers of possessive love that destroys
rather than unites.
"Jesus fills us with feelings, which in some ways are somewhat
sentimental, in order to free us on the contrary from a
possessive, voracious and destructive love," said Zuppi during
Mass in the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome.
In the end jealous love "seeks only for itself, while love
unites with the beloved", added the president of the Italian
Bishops' Conference.
"Love is seen in small gestures," Zuppi said.
His comments came against the backdrop of public dismay over the
murder of 22-year-old Giulia Cecchettin allegedly by her ex
boyfriend in what is the latest in a long string of femicides in
Italy.
Italy's schools held a minute's silence on Tuesday as a mark of
respect for Cecchettin and the government is set to present a
plan to give young people relationship education in schools as
part of efforts to prevent gender-based violence. (ANSA).
