(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 11 - A 28-year-old construction worker died on Monday when a crane operating in a building site in central Milan dropped its load on top of him by mistake.
The victim, from Egypt, died instantly.
Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala said the accident is "yet another tragedy at work".
"We keep making calls about safety, but objectively not enough is being done," he continued, adding that not just protocols but also "constant supervision" are needed.
Workplace safety "is becoming an extremely delicate issue that explodes at times in the face of tragedies and then it is forgotten", said Sala.
"But it cannot work like that," he concluded.
Last month workplace accident insurance agency INAIL reported that it had received 868 reports of work-related deaths in the first 10 months of the year, down 4.5% over the same period in 2022.
Reports of work-related accidents also fell by 17.8% to 489,526 in the same period, INAIl added.
The agency said the reduction of accident reports was almost exclusively due to the significant decrease in cases of infection by COVID-19.
Last Tuesday President Sergio Mattarella said "in the face of deaths at work or due to work, the institutions of the Republic, at every level, have the duty to raise safety levels and take every possible action to reduce risks and promote a culture of prevention".
"The dignity of work and the care of life must prevail over any other interest," he added. (ANSA).
