Meloni's silence over Fascist salutes embarrassing - PD

(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 10 - Opposition Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein said Wednesday that Premier Giorgia Meloni's failure to comment on the Fascist salutes made by many participants of Sunday's commemoration for the 1978 Acca Larentia massacre in Rome was "embarrassing".
    "Premier Meloni spoke for three hours (at her end-of-year press conference)," Schlein told the Lower House.
    "All she needed was 30 seconds to declare herself to be anti-Fascist".
    Over 100 people have been identified in relation to the Fascist salutes made by participants commemorating the 46th anniversary of the Acca Larentia massacre, in which three far-right youth militants died, sources said Wednesday. Far-right groups from many parts of the country took part in the commemoration and the Rome branch of the DIGOS special security and political police unit is working with police in several cities to identify other people involved during the event outside the former headquarters of the neo-Fascist Italian Social Movement (MSI) in Via Acca Larentia.
    The event was not attended by Premier Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, whose roots go back to the MSI.
    Apology of Fascism is outlawed in Italy.
    On Wednesday Schlein reiterated her call for all neo-fascist organisation to be disbanded in Italy.
    Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi replied by saying that, when the PD was in government, it did not seek to ban any far-right groups. (ANSA).
