(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 19 - The government is trying to get a second car manufacturer to set up in Italy in order to meet overall production targets and protect labour, Business and Made in Italy Minister Adolfo Urso said on Friday.
"We are working for a second car manufacturer to set up in our country in order to reach our overall target of producing 1. 4 million vehicles in Italy," said Urso before meeting union representatives and a delegation of workers from multinational car manufacturer Stellantis, formed in 2021 from the merger of Italian-American Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and the French PSA Group, and its satellite companies in Potenza.
"That number of cars produced could meet the needs of the domestic market and fully safeguard the production system," he continued.
"It is not easy, but we are working on it," added Urso.
Since taking office the government of Premier Giorgia Meloni has insisted on the need to reverse the decline in car production in Italy in recent years, particularly by getting Stellantis to bring manufacturing back to the country.
Last month the group cnfirmed its commitment to reach a production level of one million cars and commercial vehicles per year in Italy under its Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan.
In a statement released after a meeting at the business and Made in Italy ministry, the group reaffirmed "the centrality of Italy" in its global strategy and the "will to create a sustainable future for its Italian operations". (ANSA).
