(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 29 - Foreign Minister and Deputy Premier
Antonio Tajani on Monday told Hungary to respect Ilaria Salis's
rights after the 39-year-old Milan elementary school teacher and
antifascist militant was dragged in chains into a court in
Budapest where she is on trial for attacking two Hungarian
neo-Nazis last February.
"We ask the Hungarian government (led by rightwing Viktor Orban)
to be vigilant and to intervene so that the rights, provided for
by EU law, of the Italian citizen Ilaria Salis detained awaiting
trial are respected", he said on X.
Monza-born Salis, who has pleaded innocent to the charges, faces
up to 11 years in jail in the trial, which has been adjourned to
May 24.
A German co-defendant, who plead guilty, got three years in jail
Monday. (ANSA).
