(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 4 - Two more prisoners killed themselves
in Italian jails on Saturday night, sources said Sunday,
bringing the total of inmate suicides to 14 this year.
The suicides took place in prisons at Verona and near Caserta.
In Verona a 45-year-old Ukrainian man hanged himself after
already cutting his own throat last month and being given
psychiatric treatment.
At Carinoal near Caserta, a 58-year-old disabled prisoner also
took his own life.
Centrist politician Davide Faraone appealed to the government to
"stop the massacre" and said prisoners like the Ukrainian man
belonged in psychiatric facilities and not prisons.
Prison union SAPPE urged Justice Minister Carlo Nordio to take
action on chronic understaffing, overcrowding and poor jail
conditions which it said had contributed to the recent wave of
suicides. (ANSA).
