(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 19 - Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, ex-premier Matteo Renzi and former Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni are among the names on the witness lists filed by the parties in the trial against four Egyptian intelligence officers accused of the kidnapping, torture and murder of Italian student Giulio Regeni in Cairo in January-February 216, whose proceedings open Tuesday before the First Assize Court in Rome, legal sources said Monday.
Regeni, a 28-year-old Cambridge University doctoral researcher into independent Egyptian trade unions, disappeared on the Cairo metro on January 25, 2016 and his semi-naked body was found in a ditch on the road to Alexandria on February 3, mutilated so badly his mother only recognised him from the tip of his nose.
Other officials on the witness lists are former national security chief Marco Minnit, the three heads of the Italian security services who have been in in place during and since the incident, the then Italian foreign ministry secretary-general Elisabetta Belloni, and the CEO of Italian energy giant Eni, Claudio Descalzi.
The four Egyptian security officials, National Security General Tariq Sabir and his subordinates, Colonels Athar Kamel Mohamed Ibrahim and Uhsam Helmi, and Major Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif, have been put on trial in absentia after Cairo long stonewalled in the case and refused to give their addresses or contact numbers.
