(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 21 - Justice Minister Carlo Nordio said
Wednesday he is opposed to the introduction of the crime of
workplace homicide as part of efforts to stem the spate of
workplace accidents and deaths.
"Just this morning the cabinet addressed the issue (of workplace
safety), also by considering the possibility of introducing new
criminal sanctions," Nordio said during a question time in the
Lower House.
"The discussion did not involve the possible introduction of the
crime of workplace homicide, which I would oppose, because (we
have seen) with the experience of road homicide, which has
disproportionately increased the penalty, that accidents have
not decreased but increased," he added.
"Other measures to combat undeclared labour are being studied,"
continued Nordio.
The crime of road homicide was introduced into the Italian
criminal code in 2016 and provides for up to 12 years in jail
for drivers who cause death under the influence of drink or
drugs. (ANSA).
