(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 24 - Italian antigay general Roberto
Vannacci is " a bit down but determined to defend himself" from
possible charges of embezzlement and fraud linked to his stint
as military attaché in Moscow a few years ago, the head of the
Italian military observatory told ANSA after Corriere della Sera
broke the news of the probe Saturday.
"I have heard from General Roberto Vannacci in these hours: he
is a bit dejected but determined to safeguard his image, his
work and his honesty," said Domenico Leggiero, president of the
Military Observatory.
Leggiero said the probe was the result of "baseless allegations
made by the (defence) ministry to politically burn the general
and throw him under the bus.
"But he will go ahead". (ANSA).
