(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 19 - Premier Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday dismissed talk of there being tension between herself and President Sergio Mattarella, adding that anyone trying to stir things up between them is set to fail.
"My relationship with President Mattarella is very good. I thank him because he never fails to give his support, not so much the government, but to the whole nation," Meloni told Rai television.
"It is a relationship that we manage directly, on a personal level "I fear that those who are scheming in order to compromise it will be disappointed".
She added that her government's plan to amend the Constitution so that the Italian premier is directly elected by the people "does not regard neither Giorgia Meloni, nor Sergio Mattarella".
She said it would not come into force until the next parliamentary term, so 2028, after the end of Mattarella's term.
"It does not regard the present, it is a reform that regards the future of the nation and the Italian people will be called on to decide what they want to do (in a referendum)," she said.
