(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 24 - Premier Giorgia Meloni's cabinet on
Friday approved a decree creating an independent commission to
oversee the economic and financial situations of Italian
professional football and basketball clubs, Sports Minister
Andrea Abodi said on Friday.
The idea of setting up the oversight body has caused tension
between the government and the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI),
the governing body for sport in Italy.
CONI President Giovanni Malagò said there risk of the move
making Italy an international embarrassment as it amounts to
political interference in the world of sport.
Abodi dismissed this charge on Friday.
"There is no danger for the autonomy of sport," he said.
"None of the regulations are in conflict with the autonomy of
sport," Abodi added when asked of the risk of Italian teams
being excluded form international competitions.
"The regulation provides precise criteria; the commission will
deliver its assessments to the federations, which will then make
their decisions on registering teams for championships". (ANSA).
