Tajani calls for visas for Singh family members in India

For widow's sister and mother, to support her at hard time

(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 24 - Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has asked the consular offices of the Italian Embassy in India to issue entry visas to the mother and sister of Soni, widow of Satnam Singh, a Sikh farm labourer who died in a work accident at Latina south of Rome last week in a shocking case that returned the spotlight onto often brutal gangmastering in Italy, foreign ministry sources said Monday.
Singh, 31, died of a massive haemorrhage after being dumped outside his hut with his arm, severed by a fruit wrapping machine, left placed on a picking basket beside him.
Soni's family members will be received as early as Tuesday at the Italian diplomatic headquarters in New Delhi in the hope that they will be able to arrive in Italy very soon to support her at this difficult time, the sources added.
Mrs Singh suffered shock at finding her husband lying dying - he perished two days later in a Rome hospital after desperate attempts to save his life - outsid the hut they shared at Borgo Santa Maria, one of the many hamlets in the Pontine Plain that are home to thousands of exploited immigrant labourers.
