(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 26 - Deputy Premier, Foreign Minister and
Forza Italia (FI) leader Antonio Tajani said Wednesday that
Premier Giorgia Meloni will have to stand her ground to make
sure Italy gets a senior position in the new European Commission
after the EPP, the socialist and the liberal groups reportedly
reached an agreement on the EU top jobs.
"Tomorrow Meloni will speak (at the EU summit)," Tajani said.
"She knows what our position is, I guess she knows what the
League's position is. "We (FI) will vote yes to the current
package, I don't think Italy can vote no.
"We'll have to see what the negotiations are like.
"The real negotiations are yet to begin.
"There is still a lot way to go in the game.
"It is clear that Meloni has to stand her ground.
"She is right to say that, while there can be a majority
decision, you cannot keep a country like Italy out.
"Meloni is not only the head of ECR, she is also the prime
minister of a government which has the EPP inside (via FI)".
