Euganean Hills get UNESCO status

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 5 - The Euganean Hills in Veneto on Friday got UNESCO world heritage status, Veneto Governor Luca Zaia announced.
    The Colli Euganei, as they are known in Italian, stretch for miles near Padua and inspired English Romantic poet Percy Shelley to pen one of his most evocative poems, Lines Written among the Euganean Hills.
    "It is a great day for our Euganean Hills: today they have gained UNESCO recognition," said Zaia, a bigwig in the rightwing League party.
    They have been included in the List of World Biodiversity Reserves: exemplary places where economic, social and cultural development is sustainable and benefits from respect for the ecosystem and biodiversity".
    The UNESCO Intergovernmental Council met in Agadir, Morocco, and decreed that the iconic Veneto site had been inscribed on the UNESCO Mabdell List. (ANSA).
