(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 8 - Paulo Fonseca said his AC Milan side will seek to win by taking the game to their opponents as he was presented as the seven-time European champions' new coach on Monday.
"I am highly motivated and very excited, as well as confident that I can do a great job," the 51-year-old Portuguese coach told a news conference.
"I know I am at a club that wants to win, a universal club.
"I am ready to start this new path and I can't wait to get started. I have great ambition and I want to win.
"I'm aware of the responsibility I have. I have a great pride and ambition too and I have confidence.
"Historically, Milan is a club that plays attacking football.
"We must be a dominant, courageous, offensive and reactive team in order to win - a team that doesn't let other teams think and play.
"The quality of play is important to me. I want to build a team that makes the fans proud, with a strong identity, and one that plays in the last 30 metres (of the pitch)".
Fonseca added, however, that Milan must also address the defensive issues it had last season under Stefano Pioli.
"We need to be a more balanced team in order to win," he said.
"I have studied the defensive issue. We must improve.
"What I can say is that we want a more aggressive team that defends further from our goal. I will work to improve this".
Fonseca's former clubs include AS Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk.
He had been in charge of Lille for the last two years, leading them to a fourth-placed finish in the French top flight in the 2023-24 campaign. (ANSA).
