Renewables overtook fossil fuels in Italy in 1st half of year

Terna reports 43.8% of electricity demand covered by renewables

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 18 - Italian grid operator Terna reported on Thursday that electricity generated by renewables overtook production from fossil fuels for the first time in Italy in the first half of 2024.
    "During the first six months of 2024, 43.8% of energy demand was covered by renewable sources (compared to 34.9% for the first six months of 2023): a historic record on a half-year basis," Terna said.
    It said production from renewable sources was up by 27.3% compared to the first half of 2023, while production from fossil fuels decreased 19%.
    "Over the period under consideration, the operating capacity of renewables increased by 3,691 MW (including 3,341 MW in solar power)," Terna said.
    "This value is 1,074 MW higher (+41%) than the same period of the previous year". (ANSA).
