Italy complains about Spaniard being NATO Med envoy

Sources says Colomina's appointment not definitive

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, JUL 19 - Italy has sent a letter to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressing surprise and disappointment at the decision to appoint a Spaniard, Javier Colomina, to the role of the Alliance's special representative for relations with the countries on the southern shore of the Mediterranean, sources said Friday.
The Italian government lobbed for the creation of an envoy for the alliance's southern flank at this month's NATO summit in Washington, arguing the position should go to an Italian.
The sources stressed that Colomina's appointment is on an interim basis and has not been made official and so a different figure could take up the role permanently when Stoltenberg's successor Mark Rutte, takes over as NATO secretary general on October 1. (ANSA).
