(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 24 - Italian President Sergio Mattarella said the situation of Italian jails should attract more attention and is "unseemly for a civilized country" like Italy.
"It's enough to remember the dozens of suicides, in just over six months", recorded this year, the president noted, addressing the Parliamentary Press Association during the traditional 'fan' ceremony before summer recess.
The president spoke about a letter he has received from inmates detained in Brescia, saying their "description is harrowing".
Living conditions in prison are "anguishing in the eyes of anyone who has sensibility and a conscience - indecorous for a civilized country as is, and should be, Italy.
"Prison cannot be a place where all hope is lost, it cannot be transformed into a criminal gym", concluded the president.
