2015 'Vela' eviction order never carried out, report

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 26 - An eviction order for the 'Sails' public housing apartment building in Naples' Scampia district where a terrace collapsed on Monday evening, killing three people and injuring 12 others, had been issued in 2015 by then-mayor Luigi de Magistris over its state of decay but never carried out, a local newspaper reported on Friday, quoting a document published by Naples' municipal government in October 2015.
    A separate document issued a year later denounced the lack of maintenance of the Sail's terraces and the risk that they might collapse.
    The order signed by de Magistris cited the need to safeguard the safety of the 159 families, for a total of 600 people, living in the Vela Celeste, the 'Sky Blue Sail' where the deadly incident took place, Il Corriere del Mezzogiorno reported.
    In Scampia, several other 'Sails' apartment buildings have been torn down over their state of decay in the crime-ridden district.
    A 'restyling' of the area, which is trying to make a civic comeback after years of being identified with the Camorra mafia and drug pushing, has started and the municipal administration announced in April renovation work on the 'Vela Celeste' to be funded under the Piano Periferie (suburbs plan) with some 18 million euros (ANSA).
