(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 1 - The women's boxing bout at the 2024 Paris Olympics between Italy's Angela Carini and Algerian Imane Khelif shows what happens when ideas are taken to extremes, Premier Giorgia Meloni said after Carini abandoned the controversial welterweight contest against an athlete who failed gender-eligibility tests at last year's world championships.
"I have been trying to explain for years that, when taken to the extreme, some theses risk impacting women's rights," Meloni said at Team Italy's Casa Italia headquarters at the Olympics.
"I think that athletes who have male genetic characteristics should not be admitted to women's competitions.
"Not because we want to discriminate against anyone, but in order to protect the right of female athletes to be able to compete on equal terms". (ANSA).
