Govt appoints commissioner for blue-crab emergency

Invasion of clam-killing crabs causing economic havoc

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 6 - The government said Tuesday that it has appointed former Rovigo Prefect Enrico Caterino as its special commission for the emergency created by the arrival of the alien clam-eating blue crab species in the Po River delta.
The crabs have wreaked havoc on the clam-farming industries of Veneto and Emilia-Romagna.
"The blue crab has compromised some economic activities and, above all, it risks compromising the entire marine ecosystem unless strategic measures are taken," Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida and Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.
"The commissioner will generate a quantum leap". (ANSA).
