(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 10 - The Italian government on Saturday urged Venezuela to respect rights and free opponents amid a crackdown on protests against the allegedly fraudulent re-election of President Nicolas Maduro in which dozens of people have been killed and many more jailed, according to a note from Premier Giorgia Meloni's office at Palazzo Chigi in Rome.
The Italian government continues to follow the situation in Venezuela with great concern, in close cooperation with its international partners, it said.
Italy, it said, calls on the Venezuelan authorities to respect the rights of all citizens and to proceed with the release of all political opponents, firmly condemning any threat or deprivation of civil liberties. (ANSA).
