EU sends 2 Italy Canadairs to help douse Athens fires

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 12 - The EU is sending aid to Greece including two Italian Canadairs to hep douse wildfires threatening Athens, a European Commission spokesperson said Monday.
    The European Union announced the launch of a major operation in Athens to help the authorities fight the forest fires. Through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, two Canadairs from Italy, a helicopter from France and two ground fire-fighting teams from the Czech Republic and Romania have been mobilised in Greece.
    "We are constantly monitoring developments and are ready to provide further assistance," said EU Commission spokesman Balazs Ujvari. (ANSA).
