(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 14 - The wildfires ravaging Greece and
threatening Athens show the devastation caused by climate
change, President Sergio Mattarella said Wednesday.
Mattarella said in a message to the President of the Hellenic
Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou:
"Dear President, unfortunately this year we are once again
witnessing the devastation caused by climate change.
"Italy stands by you in this terrible emergency caused by the
fires that are threatening your beautiful capital, so rich in
treasures of all humanity.
"This new emergency is further evidence that the international
community must act with more conviction and faster.
"I hope we will have a chance to talk about this soon, including
at the next Arraiolos meeting".
The Arraiolos Group is an informal meeting of Presidents of
parliamentary and semi-presidential European Union member
states, held roughly once a year.
The EU has sent aid including two Italian Canadairs to help
Greece fight the fires. (ANSA).
