(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 16 - Alternative measures to detention,
including house arrest or probation, for detainees who have not
been convicted for serious offenses and have to serve residual
sentences of less than a year are being considered by the
justice ministry, according to well-informed sources close to
the dossier on jail reform.
The proposal, already discussed on August 7 at a meeting between
Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, and the National guarantor for
persons deprived of their liberty, is aimed at fighting prison
overcrowding, the sources said. (ANSA).
