Gallipoli basements rented to tourists for up to €3,000

Finance police discover 73 additional people in 31 apartments

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 17 - Finance police in the popular area of Gallipoli in Puglia have discovered the presence of 73 additional people above legislation limits staying in 31 vacation rentals in the resorts of Baia Verde and Lido San Giovanni, handing fines of over 25,000 euros to the apartments' owners during the course of an operation, investigative sources said Saturday.
    Overall, police found that 216 young tourists from all over Europe were staying in the apartments searched and they were willing to pay between 1,200 and 3,000 euros per week for any type of rental in the area, investigators said.
    In particular, four young tourists were renting a studio apartment, with a little kitchen set up on a balcony, even though the flat could house no more than one person.
    Finance police also discovered that basements were being rented to tourists, investigative sources said. (ANSA).
